                                                                    NEWS RELEASE

Complaint number:        13-002631

Incident Type:               Infant death

Date Occurred:             7-27-2013                Time:        Approximately 5:17 p.m.

Location:                      Apartment in the 100 Block of Devon, City of Parchment

Incident Summary:

The Kalamazoo Integrated Dispatch Center received a 911 call of an unresponsive infant in an apartment in the 100 block
of Devon in the City of Parchment Saturday evening.  Kalamazoo Township Police officers, the Parchment Fire Department
and LIFE EMS responded and rendered aid to the child.  Unfortunately, 5 month old Naima Inex Atkinson did not respond
to these efforts and could not be revived.  She was pronounced dead at approximately 5:52 p.m. at the scene by a
physician from the Western Michigan University School of Medicine.

Township officers are continuing their investigation in cooperation with the Kalamazoo County Medical Examiner’s Office
and the Child Protective Services Unit of the Michigan Department of Human Services.  An autopsy was conducted on the
infant by the Medical Examiner’s office yesterday.  Final autopsy results are not available and will not be for some time,
however based on everything known at this point it appears the child may have died as a result of an unsafe sleep
environment.

In the course of this investigation, the infant’s father, Tarqua Deron Atkinson, DOB 4/22/1987 was taken into custody on
warrants unrelated to this investigation.

The Kalamazoo Township Police strongly suggest parents and caretakers of infant children review and practice safe sleep
practices for infants and young children in their care.  Information can be obtained by visiting the Department Of Human
Service’s
website
